Geometry is a branch of mathematics that is particularly conducive to projects as alternative assessments. Projects are an exciting way to allow students to use their creativity and perhaps discover hidden talents. Students' finished products continue to be a source of wonder and delight! The following web pages are the handouts, with allocated points on each facet of the project, that were given to students. Please have fun with your students and relish in their achievement!

Pictured below is one of the quilts created for this project. I wrote an article entitled "More Than I Bargained For!", which appeared in the December issue of The Kappan. The except below is taken from that article which can be found online at http://www.alphadeltakappa.org/public/index.htm. When you go to the site, in the left frame under Alpha Delta KAPPAN, choose Selected Articles from December 2000. The list of articles will appear in the frame on the right. When you click on the name of the article, "More Than I Bargained For!", the link will take you to the complete article.

"When she left Vietnam, Minh did not tell her father that she loved him. And, she did not know she would never see her dad again. Her built up guilt over many years was released by making this quilt piece. She was finally able to say, "I love you and remember you and hope you know how much I love you." There was complete silence in class as each one of us felt for her...it was cathartic for us all."
