Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Resources
Introduction What is the Food Guide Pyramid?
The Pyramid is an outline of what to eat each day based on the Dietary Guidelines. It's not a rigid prescription, but a general guide that lets you choose a healthful diet that's right for you. The Pyramid suggests eating a variety of foods to get the nutrients you need and also the right amount of calories to maintain or improve your weight.
The purpose of this web page is to help students learn about the pyramid, form healthy eating habits, categorize foods into proper food groups, learn about cultural variations of the pyramid, and plan meals based on the pyramid.

The Main Task

Your menu should include a breakfast meal, lunch and dinner. It should include both snacks as well as main dishes.

The Process
Arrange yourselves in groups of four. Each student in the group would pair up with another student and take the responsibility to accomplish one of the last two sub tasks listed below. All students in the group would have to fulfill the first two sub tasks and document their work. Students will be allowed two class periods to do initial research and take online quizzes. Your group should compile your work to fulfill The Main Task mentioned above.
To accomplish the above said task, your group has to go through a structured process as described below:
- Each student of your group will study the Food Guide Pyramid and write a one page response on the Food Guide Pyramid and submit to the teacher (due two weeks after the assignment is handed out).
- Each student of your group will refer to the pyramid to categorize foods and servings into appropriate food groups by taking Online Quizzes. Questions should be answered and results should be printed and submitted by each one separately (due two weeks after the assignment is handed out).
- A pair of students from your group will study about the Cultural variations of the Pyramid and prepare notecards that will help to prepare the menu (due two weeks after the above assignments are successfully completed).
- Another pair will recognize the importance of the Pyramid for young kids and submit a day's meal plan based on their understanding (due two weeks after the the first two assignments are successfully completed).
- After finishing the above tasks, get together as a group and discuss your work. Compile your data and findings, which you did in pairs, into one report and submit. Afterwards, plan a menu that you will prepare for the International Day, based on your learning. Submit your menu (due one week after all the above assignments are successfully completed).

Evaluation
Your work will be assessed on both group and individual performance. The grade will be determined by the evaluation of all the four sub tasks. The following evaluation process would help you to assess your work:
- First Sub task: 15% of the total grade. You will be assessed on the effectiveness and thoroughness of your study of the Food Guide Pyramid and hence the content of your response.
- Second Sub task: 15% of the total grade. You will take all three online quizzes and submit the result or answer sheet.
- Third Sub task: 15% of the total grade. Your pair will be assessed on your understanding of cultural variations and hence details for the main task on the notecards.
- Fourth Sub task: 15% of the total grade. Your pair will be assessed on your understanding of the pyramid for young kids and hence the meal plan. It should be congruent with the pyramid guidelines.
- Final Menu (Main Task): 40% of the total grade. The final menu will be assessed on how well it fulfills the pyramid guidelines, nutritional requirements, cultural variations in the selection of recipes, and the variety of food choices from various food groups.
