What Everyone Should Know About English for Speakers of Other Languages

ESOL students bring with them a rich diversity of cultural and linguistic backgrounds to which they are adding the English language and American culture. ESOL students come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, ranging from extensive to little or no formal schooling. Their acquisition of English is affected by many factors including their educational background and prior experience. While there are some predictable stages in their language development, the rate of the development process varies from student to student. Even students who have exited the ESOL program will continue to need support as their English proficiency develops.
