Photography 1

Grade: 9-12 Pre-requisite: 8th grade Art, Art 1 or Sophomore Standing Credit: 1

As one of the most popular electives in FCPS, Photography 1 is structured to give students an understanding of the fundamentals of black and white photography. The study of light, design, cameras, films, basic darkroom techniques, and the history of photography are covered. Students will process their own negatives and prints. Students are required to have access to a 35mm camera and provide film and printing paper as needed. Learning to see, to select, to present, and to critique are the heartbeat of the program. Results are maintained in a beginning portfolio.

Photography 2

Grade: 10-12 Pre-requisite: Photography 1 Credit: 1

Photography 2 is an extension of Photo 1 with an emphasis on experimentation and special effects through films, papers, and darkroom techniques. Styles of photography, their leading exponents, equipment and techniques are discussed in their historical contexted. Conducting a critique, evaluating great works of art, and examining photography and its relationship to other art forms are also studied. Development of a portfolio is required as students become dynamic designers of light.

Photography 3/Portfolio Preparation

Grade: 11-12 Pre-requisite: Photography 2 Credit: 1

Students build on the components covered in Photography 1 and 2. They work on a contract basis and a culminating portfolio evidencing quality, concentration and breadth of work throughout their high school program will be required. Students select their owm area(s) of concentration and a one person show is required at the end of the year. Exceptional initiative and commitment to the photographic medium is expected of these advanced level students.
